Piano tuning and rebuilding is definitely a art form that is losing its best artist. 100 years ago, piano technician made as much income as the local doctor/surgeon. Now most technician never received enough training to perfect their craft, resulting in sub limited capabilities that don't even include proper piano rebuilding expertise. In the only authorized Piano Technicians Guild when I was the Vermont State President of the organization, I pushed for a standardized testing procedures. My new test passed but we got new membership status that required no testing. 89% of the members didn't pass the new test to a "concert" level ability. Most piano tuners charge about the same, price shopping is not the best way to get qualified technicians. The biggest problem is that most tuners don't know nearly enough about rebuilding pianos. Even their repairs aren't really up to factory standards. Many of the best technicians have either recently passed away or priced out of proper income. When someone's real capabilities vastly surpass the competition, everyone is scared of that. Some piano stores try to control too much of the industry, instead of letting qualifications show the course. Kind of like how the hospitals try to control doctors and medicine now. The Piano is the most complicated "mechanical" instrument known to man. Most don't know that! A clock or pipe organ isn't nearly as advanced in the complex engineering involved. Automobiles and most other machines use electricity or power, they're electro-mechanical. If any one would like to ask any question about pianos, please call me. 205-945-8324 My expertise include: -7 Year German Steinway Apprenticeship and Specialist Award. -20 years tuning most concert halls and colleges in Vermont, Boston and Alabama -Past President of Piano Technicians Guild in Vermont. -Electrical engineering expertise on piano humidifying systems. -Concert pianist & keyboardist with two solo recordings published. Sincerely- Richard Giroux
