The following is an opinion only. I disavow any and all legal responsibilities for the abuse caused by others. If in danger contact the police

A court appointed attorney or a public defender doesn't always help one in the ways that a victim might need. First they are often too busy and overloaded, so not enough time can be spent on one's case.

Second, I often see a public defender confers with the states attorney on what to do, what to plea bargain, and what information to share. I personally feel that a public defender seems to "work with," instead of "fight against" the state attorney more often than not. That's not much help to the victims if they are fighting the state, and/or need intensive help in researching and presenting "a lot" of evidence, etc.

Human Services, or Social Services in our state government don’t "always" do what is best for the victims. Their "over-reactions", sometimes in-actions and sometimes erroneous information can lead to situations that are not in the victims' best interest.

Ask a social worker that is retired. Social workers are not psychologists, but they are trained to make decisions that deeply affect victims' lives. Most retired social workers say that they are frustrated with the system, over worked, can't spend enough time on each case and constantly face bureaucratic decisions that don't really help their causes.

Human Services use their own people to oversee their appropriate or inappropriate actions. No agency should oversee themselves. Don't be fooled into thinking that when someone makes mistakes, they won’t try to cover them up in some way.

What Human Services need all over the country is an "independent" board to oversee our state services that help victims. We shouldn't let them cover up mistakes, oversee themselves, or assume they always do the right thing. False reports do happen and abusers do falsely blame victims.

Most psychologists in any area are either hired by or referred by Human Services. So, be careful. It's very hard to find one that is really “independent" or willing to fight the state. You will sometimes find yourself with a doctor that is supporting the opposing side instead of yours, even though you hired them yourself.
